What’s on offer:

Hourly Rate: £14.13 + holiday pay (15.55%, equivalent to 38 days paid leave per year).
Duration: Fixed Term Contract starting in Term 3, 2026, until 3 July 2027 (subject to a 26-week probationary period).
Hours: It is anticipated that you will work an average of 8-16 hours per week throughout the 3 ten-week terms of the term. These hours are not guaranteed and depend on the business's needs, which vary throughout the year. You will be expected to be available to work a number of Wednesday- and Saturday-night shifts. Most shifts will be evenings, but there will be daytime requirements from time to time.

What’s the role?
You will be assisting with the set-up and operation of technical systems for events and activities organised by or within the Students' Union. You will be required to help ensure that a high standard of service is provided to customers efficiently and that a safe working environment is maintained.

JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE: Technical Services Team Leader

RESPONSIBLE TO: Head Technicians and, via them, the Facilities & Safety Manager, Commercial Operations Director, Chief Executive, Board of Trustees

RESPONSIBLE FOR: Technical Services Crew

MAIN PURPOSE FOR JOB: Set up and operate technical systems for events. Provide high standards of hiring services. Provide technical services for club and society activities. Ensure a high standard of services to members and other customers, including clubs and societies. Supervise and provide support, motivation and training for crew.

MAIN DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES

  • To supervise Technical Services crew when Event Technicians are not on duty
  • To prepare venues and equipment for events - to include setting up and operating the Union’s PA and lighting equipment, assisting bands with the get-in and get-out of their equipment, assisting with the changeover between bands on stage.
  • To specialise in sound, lighting or stage management.
  • To attend training sessions as required, to assist in the training of new crew members, and to read the training literature provided
  • To ensure that any and all equipment defects are reported to the Event Technician
  • To ensure that all safety procedures and codes of practice are followed at all times
  • The above are to be discharged in accordance with organisation policy and practice on equality of opportunity, health and safety and customer care.
  • To commit to reducing the Students’ Union environmental impact and promote environmental and ethical good practice. To be carried out in line with the Students’ Unions Environmental Policy

EXPECTED STANDARDS

  • To treat all crew as laid down in SU policies & procedures and ensure Technical Services crew receive clear instructions and are competent to carry out the tasks asked of them
  • To be on time for work with the correct personal equipment. To rig equipment safely and correctly in accordance with Health and Safety regulations. To ensure the stage and venue is tidy and free of hazards at all times.
  • Once trained and working as an ā€˜engineer’ or ā€˜stage manager’ on an event, you may have overall responsibility for other crew members working that event
  • Entries are to be made promptly in the Equipment Maintenance Log.
  • Certain items of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and other safety equipment will be provided. These must be available at all times when you are working and used as directed

ESSENTIAL SKILLS / KNOWLEDGE / QUALIFICATIONS

  • Adequate technical knowledge to operate AV, sound and lighting within the SU
  • The ability to manage a group of student staff who do not necessarily have a great amount of technical knowledge
